For parents of teens with autism, the question "What happens after high school?" can feel overwhelming. But with the right planning, your teen can transition into a fulfilling adult life.
When Does Transition Planning Start?
Under IDEA, transition planning must begin no later than age 16 — but many experts recommend starting at 14 or even earlier. The earlier you start, the more time you have to build skills and explore options.
In Texas, transition services must be addressed in the IEP by the time your child turns 16. This includes measurable post-secondary goals related to education, employment, and independent living.
Key Areas of Transition Planning
1. Post-Secondary Education
Does your teen want to attend college, vocational training, or a certificate program? The transition plan should include steps to prepare — like college visits, entrance exam prep, and accommodations planning.
2. Employment
What kind of work interests your teen? Transition planning should include job exploration, internships, volunteer opportunities, and skills training. Vocational rehabilitation services can also be a valuable resource.
3. Independent Living
Can your teen manage daily tasks like cooking, transportation, money management, and self-care? The transition plan should address these life skills explicitly.
4. Self-Advocacy
One of the most important skills your teen can develop is the ability to advocate for themselves. In school, they should participate in their own IEP meetings. After school, they'll need to request accommodations and communicate their needs independently.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Starting too late
Don't wait until senior year. Begin exploring options and building skills as early as possible.
Vague goals
Transition goals should be specific and measurable — not generic statements like "will explore career options."
Not involving your teen
Your teen should be at the center of their own transition planning. Their interests, strengths, and preferences matter most.
"Transition planning isn't about predicting the future — it's about preparing for it. Every skill your teen builds now is a step toward a more independent, fulfilling life."
