16 Years in Behavioral Health — A Journey of Purpose and People

Recovery happens in relationships — between providers, partners, families, and the brave individuals who choose healing every day.

Journey in Behavioral Health

Sixteen years ago, I started my career in behavioral health not knowing it would become my life's work.

I began in direct care — working face-to-face with individuals in treatment. It was humbling, challenging, and deeply rewarding. Those early years taught me something that has guided every decision since: recovery happens in relationships.

From Direct Care to National Leadership

Over the years, my career evolved from clinical outreach to business development, and eventually to National VP of Business Development. I've worked with organizations like Recovery Unplugged, Discovery Behavioral Health, and Serenity Light Recovery.

Each role taught me something different, but the core lesson remained the same: the best outcomes happen when business strategy serves the mission — not the other way around.

What I've Learned Along the Way

People Over Numbers

Census matters. Revenue matters. But behind every admission is a person making the bravest decision of their life. When we lose sight of that, we lose sight of why we do this work.

Relationships Are Everything

The strongest referral networks aren't built on transactions — they're built on trust. Every partnership I've developed has been rooted in genuine care for the people we serve together.

Systems Create Freedom

The facilities that thrive aren't the ones with the biggest budgets — they're the ones with the best systems. When growth is predictable, teams can focus on what matters most: patient care.

Purpose Sustains You

This industry is demanding. The hours are long, the stakes are high, and burnout is real. What keeps me going is knowing that the work we do changes lives — and sometimes saves them.

"Recovery happens in relationships — between providers, partners, families, and the brave individuals who choose healing every day. I'm grateful to play a small part in that journey."

Looking Ahead

Today, through Maldonado Consulting, I help behavioral health facilities build the systems and strategies they need to grow — sustainably and with purpose.

If you're in this industry, I'd love to connect. Whether you're a facility owner, a clinical director, or someone just starting out — this work is better when we do it together.
